Researching on affordable peels.
Hi Everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying the weekend. I’ve been lazy today and was tumbling around the bed all day. You guys probably know how I feel about my skin. I feel like I’ve semi-broadcasted how my skin condition went down the drain to my viewers for the past 2ish-3ish years.
I’ve never had perfect skin so I’ve come to accept it, but, I would jump at almost anything if it could help me improve my conditions.
To begin with, I have large pores. That’s like a given to my family since I’ve always been amused at my gigantic pores around my cheeks and nose area since I can remember. I remember my teacher commenting about my huge pores when I was only in the third grade. That says a lot, haha.
On top of that, I have sensitive skin, which gets red and irritates easily.
And throw in the dreadful acne and premature sagging, with a bunch of scars and there, you have my skin.
I’ve always envied people with porcelain-like skin and no visible pores. I could get quite pale, but my skin would look thin and textured (which I hate :'( waaahh).
But, anyway, I love reading progressive posts about products, and I was reading this article from My big bowl of oats!!. I like how she legitimately reviewing a lot of things by trying products out herself. She wrote about another peel (that was expensive), but I liked her Salicylic peel article better.
There seems to be a great rating of this product on amazon (Read the reviews here), which says a lot because it’s quite hard to see so many reviewers and such a high level of stars.
I ordered mine online (I’m going to start with 20% and see how it goes since my skin is a bit more on the sensitive side), and I will try to blog/vlog about the daily procedures.
Anyway, (based on reading posts and reviews) here are some key points that are important.
– May not work on colored skins. It seems like 50/50 for African American descents.
– Burning seems common.
– Skin gets bad/red, and after that period seems to drastically improve.
– Not recommended for people who could be pregnant.
– You can’t get yourself exposed in the sun during the peeling processes, so best not done if you have to work or stay in the sun for a long period of time.
– Seems like it doesn’t completely eliminate scarring or acne for some people.
– shouldn’t be inhaled.
Here’s some before/after pictures I scrapped from the internet.
omg.. if this is truly the result of the peel, I’m mind blown!
Seems like she’s in the process
man, even this much reduction seems swell!!
Beauty industry myths are that these types of chemical peels will eventually thin your skin. I’m not sure about that since we shed so much skin and skin itself regenerates rapidly throughout the course of one’s entire life.
So what do you guys think?
Has anyone ever tried this at home?
hmmm.. do you think these products were tested on animals? :'(

i think i have the same type of skin you do. acne-prone, large pores 🙁 i'm not sure how i feel about peels though. they look kind of scary and harmful. ack! i wanna see your results after you finish yours!

Your skin seems to be very similar to mine, but I think my skin is a lot more sensitive. (Not to fragrance/color, but to anything that's really acidic and harsh, including salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide…maybe alpha hydroxy acid) I get acne very frequently and I accumulated a lot of scars overtime, some faded some…still working on it.
I think my skin has gotten a lot worse from using acne treatment products, because I had the worst skin of my life for the last two years, which is when I really started to treat my acne. Trying all the products (neutrogena, clean&clear, the body shop, st.ives, vichy, random home remedies…I even tried iqqu and got a spot treatment from ddf)made my skin very unstable, all the spots I got were very cystic acne. I had better skin when I didn't pay that much attention to my acne than when I'm trying every product that existed.
I stopped using acne treatment products since last fall, from cleanser to moisturizers, and no more spot treatments, things have gotten much better. I still have acne now, but it was not nearly as severe as before (I used to get 1~3 cystic spots EVERYDAY) Right now I'm just waiting for my scars to fade…hopefully they will fade.
Since my skin may not be exactly like yours and I don't know how often you use acne treatments, but I hope my experience may be some help to you. (I still can't believe it took me two years to figure it out…so much money went into giving me horrendous skin!)
Sorry for the long post again. ^^;

I tried using TCA peels, and I felt they improved my skin condition a lot! I used to have a few deep acne scars (as my boyfriend has noticed), and now they're completely gone. I'm currently using Nano Cyclic soap, and my mom has been commenting that my skin looks less red and brighter.
I think for peels, if you do it yourself, you can do a lot of damage to skin. I feel that people sometimes get really desperate and want immediate results, so in the process they go a little crazy and end up with even more troubled skin. I'm more partial to the "lunchtime" chemical peels, since the peeling and your general appearance isn't as bad, and I don't trust myself to do deep peels (would rather a professional do it for me).
I'm not sure if those peels would thin skin over time, but as long as you know when to stop and do it occasionally, I don't think it's bad to do.

For at home peels, I have tried the Brazilian Peel, Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel (comes in Full Strength or Sensitive), and Arcona Raspberry Resurfacing Peel. I like them all. They are safe and the results are amazing on my dry, sensitive, and sometimes prone to breakouts skin.

I haven't tried such a drastic chemical peel at home, but my dermatologist did prescribe me a 10% glycolic acid cream, which does the peeling. I did experience the burning feeling and my skin did peeled, but I think the formula is relatively moisturizing, because my skin wasn't flaky. I did receive glycolic peels (I believe it's 20 or 25%) at the medical spa, and boy did it not only burn, but my skin had a burnt/bubbly texture that was quite nasty for the next few days.
I did the chemical peel for my freckles and actually, it didn't help, but of course the "new" skin did look quite healthy and glowing.
For now, I use my 10% glycolic peel for acne scars (dotting the cream on the acne scar only), and it still take a while to go away :T I think you are better off with one or two intense peeling than having to chronically use a chemical peel at home.

It's so easy to accidentally do or time something wrong with those kind of things that I'd rather leave it up to a derm or their nurse.. even if it costs way more. I've kind of taken the Lisa Eldridge way of looking at things.. be as gentle to your skin as possible. I have similar skin to yours and have had a massive bout of acne over the past year and I think the best remedy beyond stress management is being patient and not obsessing. It's also the hardest thing to do..

I've seen these before but I've never tried it…if you've researched it properly and it seems quite good to try maybe you should go for it

hi cat! i can totally relate as i have the same problem with my own skin 🙁 chemical peels are better if done in sessions.i might try a fruit peel but it sounds expensive, so would rather repeat another diamond peel session with my recent visit to a face salon.i've tried once and was amazed by the result.seeing all the dead skin cells is just awesome 0_0 i found out that if i eat a lot of salty foods and greasy stuff, i get whiteheads that if not scrubbed, turns to a cystic acne :d hope you find what's best on you.keep it up! <33

omg the results seem like a miracle product because my skin is horrible, too. T__T my aunt raves about chemical peels and always does them, but the idea of peeling off layer(s) of my skin really scares me even if it regenerates itself :/ i'm really curious to see how it turns out for you! ^^

hi

Have you ever heard of Fraxel, Cat? My cousin is a dermatologist (who graduated from Seoul National Univ.) and while I was in Korea last month, he did one session of Fraxel on my skin. Apparently it's one of the newest and best technologies out there for acne scars and stuff. Even after one session, I felt a HUGE difference. My cousin said it would take about 3 sessions for my nasty scars on my cheeks to completely go away, but ever since that first session my skin feels SO SMOOTH. Like I'm not even joking! When I'm touching my skin and not looking at the mirror, it feels like i have flawless skin. Of course the red acne marks are still there but the texture of my skin improved ten fold. The best thing about it is that down time for me was only one day !! (I think I got the Fraxel Re:store done). My cousin said I could start wearing make up again the next day. Your skin hardens for the first few days but later on all that hardened skin comes off after regular cleansing. My skin felt completely normal after a week, but during that week my skin didn't look bad with makeup. One thing to note is that my cousin said there are different versions of the Fraxel machine, and the more recent machine that gets used, the better the results – I believe the most recent and advanced version is one where they roll the laser tool on your face instead of shooting it on your face. I read a lot of really bad reviews on acne.org about Fraxel, but to be honest I think it's just because their dermatologist used the cheaper machines. You should check it out when you're ever in Korea 🙂

Oh I must add – even though the acne marks are still there, I can really tell my acne marks have visibly reduced from it 🙂

Please keep us updated if you do try any peels! I've been thinking about doing them as well (or trying microdermabrasion). I have acne-prone, combo-oily, sensitive skin with large pores & pitted acne scars…I'm trying a prescribed topical cream with some kind of acid in it that is making me peel, but I'm not seeing much results from it :/

I find that diamond peel is cheaper and more worth it. Other skin products just don't work great as this one. I've been doing it for years and my skin is still crystal clear.
